Cognito Europe

Client demands for specialist consultancy drives APAC expansion

LONDON, Wednesday 8th February 2012 – GreySpark Partners, the capital markets consultancy, has opened its new office in Hong Kong, to support its APAC clients. Founded in 2009, GreySpark has been built into a leading consultancy with global clients. The firm now has over 50 consultants delivering projects in 7 countries, with Hong Kong being the newest hub they open after London. This move gives GreySpark a firm footing in the region, as Asian markets continue to perform impressively.

GreySpark’s Hong Kong office will provide on-site and local delivery for client projects that are currently being managed from the UK. Driven by client demands, it is clear that the region faces shortages of highly specialised skills, which GreySpark will provide.

As financial markets have expanded and diversified, and client focus has become increasingly global, the Asian markets have become more and more strategically important. Despite the continuing global financial crisis, the region still enjoys significant growth, compared to contraction of the wholesale finance sector experienced in Europe.

Grey Spark Partners currently caters for the buy-side, including investment managers, asset managers, hedge funds; the sell-side, including investment banking, corporate banking, brokers and dealers; as well as solution providers, including exchanges, multilateral trading facilities, electronic communication networks, market data providers and independent software vendors. This emphasis will be rolled out in their APAC operations. They plan to open a New York based operation in 2013.

The team will be led by Andrew McLauchlan, Partner & Managing Director Asia Pacific. He will be responsible for overall strategy and operations, focusing on bringing increased value to existing and new clients. Prior to this role, McLauchlan was based in London as Partner at GreySpark, and before this was business development director for NET2S where he managed a team of sales executives, as well as being directly responsible for the firm’s major accounts.

“You cannot ignore that the centre of gravity of global financial institutions is shifting East,” said Frederic Ponzo, Managing Partner, GreySpark. “Out of all the global financial centres to expand to, Hong Kong is the obvious choice. Since GreySpark launched in 2009, we have seen sustained growth and our move to open an office in the region aims to maintain this momentum. We are very much looking forward to supporting our existing clients in the region, as well as providing cutting edge expertise to the growing financial sector.”

Andrew McLauchlan added “I am very excited about the prospects of working in a new market with an existing and new client base. We aim to assist clients as their goals and scope change, and welcome the opportunity to provide firms operating in the region with local expertise and support”.

Latency is a challenge across asset classes

Pursuit of speed yields a demand for latency measurement and reduction offerings

LONDON – 1st February 2012 – GreySpark Partners, the capital markets consultancy, has revealed that low latency requirements are no longer just the confine of the equity trading markets and that the need for speed is equal, if not greater, in other asset classes.

A new research paper entitled “Low Latency: Faster than Light”, shows that, in particular, FX, bonds and listed futures and options markets are benefitting from and demanding ultra-low latency trading platforms. The report indicates that since the advent of electronic exchanges in the mid-90s, the latency thresholds under which a trading platform must perform to stay competitive have been halving every three years, to reach levels of a few tens of milliseconds.

The report is an industry-wide analysis of low latency technology providers and strategies to reduce latency. Underpinned by interviews with providers of latency measurement tools and compounded by the professional experience of GreySpark consultants, this analysis evaluates 20 strategies designed to reduce latency. In approaching over 30 vendors GreySpark has analysed latency at the application, server and network levels.

According to the research, compiled by GreySpark’s dedicated research arm Capital Markets Intelligence, and published in cooperation with Best Execution magazine, latency, or “the total elapsed time between the event, or signal, triggering a trading decision and the actual completion of that trading action”, is generated at three levels in today’s electronic platforms. Firstly, in the applications that interpret financial information and make trading decisions (~65%); secondly in the middleware that distributes the various messages and signals (~25%); and thirdly in the network fabric that transports data from a market to the trading firm and then back to the market (the last ~10%).

“Speed has always been an intrinsic part of trading,” commented Frederic Ponzo, Managing Partner, GreySpark Partners. “Evolving from signal lanterns allowing a message to be transmitted from New York to the Philadelphia stock exchange in less than 30 minutes, to fibre optic cables with the ability to carry information around the globe in milliseconds in today’s financial markets, it remains crucial in retaining a competitive edge. We hope this report will shed some light on what the key actions are when reducing latency, and which strategies work”.

Following the launch of GreySpark's research paper on OTC Clearing - “OTC Derivative Clearing: Navigating the New Regulatory Landscape”, this is a summary of coverage in UK financial and trade media.

GreySpark’s research paper on OTC Clearing - “OTC Derivative Clearing: Navigating the New Regulatory Landscape” – was launched at a media roundtable event recently, attracting key titles from buy-side and sell-side publications.

The main emphasis in the media was on the operational complexity and regulatory uncertainty that the buy-side and sell-side will face during the reform of the OTC derivatives market. It is clear that market participants have little understanding around the number of central counter parties (CCPs) that will exist, and what the key changes to CCPs. Additionally, increased operational costs associated with central clearing was highlighted as a key issues, particularly for the buy-side.

Clearly, on both sides of the capital markets, the impact will be felt. One notable change will be the cost of collateral. Whereas before you could net off exposure, with multiple CCPs, this won’t be possible,” he explains.

Keynote coverage appeared in the following outlets:

Euromoney
